What is an annotated law and how do I access it in Espace CAIJ?

Last updated: 4 June 2025

An annotated Law is the full bilingual text of a Quebec or federal statute, enriched with annotations to facilitate its understanding and interpretation. CAIJ Annotated Laws can be accessed from the Espace CAIJ home page.

Annotations can include:

  • Legislative history of the provision;
  • Annotations on case law and doctrine, including:
    • those of Baudouin and Renaud on the Civil Code of Quebec;
    • those of Vincent Karim on obligations, contracts of enterprise, contracts for services and legal hypothecs;
    • those of the Alter Ego collection (Wilson & Lafleur) for various legislative texts (Charter of Rights, Code of Civil Procedure, LATMP, LNT, Labour Code, LFI);
  • Links to case law and legal literature citing the article;
  • References to other relevant doctrinal sources, such as the CAIJ’s documented research questions;
  • Model pleadings drawn up by the Minister, when available;
  • Ministerial comments, parliamentary debates or positions of legal bodies, as appropriate;
  • References to other related legislative provisions.

Please note: some annotations (such as parliamentary debates and Bar positions) are not included for federal statutes or the Code of Civil Procedure.
