Help and frequently asked questions

How does the search function work?

Last updated: 18 February 2026

Enter your question in plain language in the search bar. Avoid using Boolean operators, strings of keywords, or alternative legal terminology. The Compagnon CAIJ analyzes the meaning of your query and retrieves relevant authorities accordingly. For greater precision, consider breaking down complex questions into several shorter, focused questions.

Before displaying results, the Compagnon CAIJ will automatically ask clarifying questions to better refine your search. Providing structured answers will help improve the accuracy of the results.

You agree not to enter any personal, confidential, sensitive, or privileged information into the Compagnon CAIJ. For further details, please consult our Terms of Use.

Note: The tool automatically searches in both French and English.

Are filters available?

Yes. The Compagnon CAIJ automatically applies filters based on your query. It can detect your intended:

  • Sources (case law, secondary sources, legislation);
  • Jurisdiction (e.g., Alberta, Ontario, Québec, Canada (federal));
  • Relevant time period.

Examples of possible queries:

  • Can you find decisions between 1995 and 2005 dealing with manufacturer liability?
  • What Ontario decisions address wrongful termination of a commercial contract?
  • What decisions from the past two years discuss non-competition clauses?

The applied filters will be displayed with your search results.
