How does interlibrary loan (ILL) work?

Last updated: 4 June 2025

The interlibrary loan (ILL) service is available to all CAIJ members with access to libraries.

If a document is not in the CAIJ’s collections, you can make a request to our research team: peb@caij.qc.ca.

If the document is eligible, the request will be forwarded to the ILL team, who will take the necessary steps with the lending institution. You will be informed of the follow-up.

Loan period: varies according to lending institution (generally 1 to 6 weeks).
Renewal: subject to lending institution’s rules. Send request to peb@caij.qc.ca.
Fees: a minimum of $5 + taxes may apply, depending on the fees set by the lending institution.

For details of applicable fees, see our pricing page.
