Sharing and democratizing knowledge: The origins of CAIJ

The CAIJ was born from a shared desire among the founding members (Barreau de Québec, Barreau de Montréal, and the Association des avocats et avocates de province) to create an efficient and effective structure that would allow members to quickly access a growing mass of legal information in a rapidly changing technological work environment.

From its inception, CAIJ’s business model has relied on building strong links with its partners. Today, CAIJ maintains a constant dialogue with its partners in the legal community to fulfill its mission.

As stated in its latest strategic plan: “More than ever, CAIJ is at the heart of the legal community. Present for its members, but also for its network of partners, the organization reaffirms its commitment to democratizing justice by improving access to legal knowledge.

Partnerships and sponsorships rooted in the promotion and dissemination of legal knowledge

CAIJ has established our niches, our network of partners and the CAIJ’s Strategic Plan (French only) to guide its activities with partners. The aim is always to contribute to the success of our members, their initiatives and their projects. CAIJ support can take the following forms:

  • Long-term partnership agreements with a multi-year commitment to joint activities and a visibility plan.
  • One-time sponsorships to organizations in the legal community in support of their mission.

These partnerships and sponsorships are in addition to the commercial or business agreements that CAIJ concludes with strategic partners such as service providers, publishers and players in the legal information field for the benefit of members.

1.

Creating, disseminating and promoting knowledge and supporting research

Preserving, disseminating and promoting the creation of quality Quebec doctrine in French is in CAIJ’s DNA. CAIJ encourages activities designed to raise the profile of Quebec legal writing, encourage its diversity and quality, and foster the emergence of new authors, such as a writing competition, an awards ceremony or the promotion of legal heritage.

2.

Integration and professional development of the next generation of lawyers

CAIJ is a valuable professional development tool that supports members throughout their careers. Beyond the technical aspects of research, CAIJ contributes to partner projects aimed at members of the next generation, enabling them to invest in the development of their knowledge (skills, know-how and interpersonal skills), to become more efficient and to stand out as professionals.

3.

Transforming the practice of law

In addition to providing access to the legal knowledge that legal professionals need to ensure the quality of their services, CAIJ is also committed to the success of their practice. CAIJ is keen to support initiatives such as conferences or others aimed at informing members about the evolution of business models, the impact of artificial intelligence or the development of members’ management skills.

4.

Supporting regional practice

Improving access to legal knowledge wherever legal professionals practice is at the heart of CAIJ’s mission. One of our top priorities is to be there to support the associations and groups of members who also contribute to the dynamism of legal services in Quebec.
